HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 755
Commending the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution was founded on July 7, 1890, as a branch of the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution was conceived as a fraternal and civic society composed of lineal descendants of the men who wintered at Valley Forge, signed the Declaration of Independence, fought in the battles of the American Revolution, served in the Continental Congress, or otherwise supported the cause of American independence; and

WHEREAS, the charter of the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution describes the objects and purposes of the society as patriotic, historical, and educational; it is charged with perpetuating the memory of the men who, by their service and sacrifices during the American Revolution, achieved the independence of the American people; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution is also dedicated to instilling in its members and the community a more profound reverence for the principles of the government founded by the nation’s forefathers and encouraging historical research about the American Revolution; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution has a long record of accomplishments in teaching about the Revolutionary War and the patriots who gained the nation’s freedom; the organization advances its mission through commemorations of battles and events that occurred during this important period of American history; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution devotes a great deal of its time, energy, and resources to working with children, so that they might have a better understanding of the history of the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution derives its strength from its many outstanding local chapters; local members participate in events, are valuable partners in fulfilling the organization’s patriotic mission, and greatly enhance the educational components of the organization in their communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution on the occasion of its 125th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for its continuing efforts to educate citizens about the American Revolution and promote patriotic devotion to the principles upon which the United States was founded.
