15104381DWHEREAS, in 2015, the members of the Rotary Club of Lunenburg celebrate 75 continuous years of putting “Service Above Self” in Lunenburg County; and
WHEREAS, Rotary International was formed in 1905 to enable members to promote goodwill and peace through the improvement of community health and well-being, to support education, and to alleviate poverty; and
WHEREAS, originally known as the Rotary Club of Victoria, the Rotary Club of Lunenburg was organized and chartered in 1940 with the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Blackstone; Robert M. Williams served as the club’s first president; and
WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Victoria’s first project was to support the Victoria Fire Company, which has become one of the best volunteer fire and rescue departments in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, to better reflect the Rotary Club of Victoria’s service in both the Town of Victoria and Lunenburg County, the club was rechartered as the Rotary Club of Lunenburg in January 1982; and
WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Lunenburg sponsors Boy Scouts of America Troop 7538 and Cub Scouts Pack 7542 and works to support residents in need with the local Salvation Army and food pantry; and
WHEREAS, promoting the importance of education, the Rotary Club of Lunenburg awards an annual scholarship to a local high school student, sponsors Student Government Day at Lunenburg Central High School, and provides books for elementary school students; and
WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Lunenburg has also engaged in a partnership with the Town of Victoria to build a basketball court at Victoria Railroad Park; and
WHEREAS, a vital part of the community, the 23 members of the Rotary Club of Lunenburg provide outstanding community service and support many other local, state, national, and international humanitarian initiatives; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Rotary Club of Lunenburg on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Donna J. Dagner, president of the Rotary Club of Lunenburg, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the club’s proud tradition of service to the residents of Lunenburg County and the Commonwealth.
