15104039DWHEREAS, in 2015, New River Community Action celebrates 50 years of helping residents of New River Valley achieve economic independence and live happier, healthier lives; and
WHEREAS, a key element of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, Community Action Agencies were established as a way to give communities the flexibility to create unique programs addressing the causes of poverty in their areas; and
WHEREAS, originally known as Montgomery-Floyd Community Action, New River Community Action was founded in 1965 and quickly established a Head Start program in the region; and
WHEREAS, New River Community Action took its current name in 1969 and now serves the Counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski and the City of Radford; the organization funds its programs through federal and state block grants and generous donations from local individuals, agencies, and service groups; and
WHEREAS, in the 1980s, New River Community Action helped establish the Free Medical Clinic in Christiansburg, turned the former Pembroke Elementary School into an apartment and child-care complex, started the SHARE Program, and sponsored summer camps; and
WHEREAS, New River Community Action also founded a community shelter in Montgomery County and administered weatherization treatments to safeguard residents in need from the elements; and
WHEREAS, in the 1990s, New River Community Action worked with local day care centers to provide free child care, expanded the CHIP program, started the Homeless Intervention Program, and opened the Floyd Family Resource Center; and
WHEREAS, New River Community Action has developed numerous other independent agencies to address local concerns on housing, health, education, nutrition, employment, and emergency assistance; and
WHEREAS, with the dedicated leadership of its board of directors and the hard work of countless volunteers and staff members, New River Community Action has succeeded in its mission to provide “a hand up, not a hand out” and help diverse communities identify and alleviate the causes of poverty; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend New River Community Action on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to New River Community Action as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s proud traditions of service to and support for the residents of the New River Valley.
