Celebrating the life of Edna Bazemore Scott.

WHEREAS, Edna Bazemore Scott, a woman of deep and abiding faith who dedicated her life to serving and supporting her fellow members of the Newport News community, died on December 20, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, Edna Scott graduated from Huntington High School with a perfect attendance record; she earned an associate’s degree from Peninsula Business College, where she joined and became president of Delta Mu Delta business sorority; and

WHEREAS, Edna Scott lived her faith through her actions as an employee of Ivy Baptist Church, which was pastored by former Senator W. Henry Maxwell, for more than four decades; she held numerous positions, including secretary, office manager, financial manager, and deaconess; and

WHEREAS, throughout her 44-year career with the church, Edna Scott offered her time and wise leadership to several ministries, clubs, and programs; she supported the church softball league and was a member of local Christian bowling leagues; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate friend and neighbor who worked to empower the youth of the community, Edna Scott held leadership positions in the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast for 35 years; she received the Girl Scouts Thanks Badge and the Girls, Inc., Community Star Award for her exceptional contributions to the lives of countless girls and young women; and

WHEREAS, Edna Scott served as a voter registrar and encouraged members of the community to always exercise their civic duty; and

WHEREAS, Edna Scott will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her loving husband of 46 years, Bernard, Sr.; children, Sonya and Bernard, Jr., and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Edna Bazemore Scott, a woman of enduring faith and a beloved member of the Newport News community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Edna Bazemore Scott as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
