HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 705
Commending the Gate City High School volleyball team.

WHEREAS, the Gate City High School volleyball team won the Virginia High School League Group 2A volleyball state championship on November 22, 2014, to claim its second consecutive state title; and

WHEREAS, returning a strong core group of players from the previous season, the Gate City High School Blue Devils were undefeated in the regular season and bested the Riverheads High School Gladiators in three sets in the state final; and

WHEREAS, the Gate City Blue Devils came from behind to tie the first set at 20, before winning 25 - 21, and they took a commanding early lead to win the second set 25 - 11; and

WHEREAS, the Riverheads Gladiators put up strong resistance in the third set, but were unable to overcome a momentum shift after the Gate City Blue Devils went on an 8 - 2 run to tie the set at 10; the Blue Devils won the third set with a final score of 25 - 20; and

WHEREAS, each of the athletes—Lindsey Harper, Kerri Hite, Caitlin McConnell, Kyra Jeesee, Hannah Spivey, Rosa Smith, Julie Dockery, Haley Reed, Hayley Wolfe, Cori Baker, and Abby Sallee—worked hard and remained focused throughout the season; and

WHEREAS, the Gate City Blue Devils also benefited from the able leadership of the coaches—Amy Reed, Dolanda Spivey, and Jessica Lewis—and the enthusiastic support of the entire Gate City High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Gate City High School volleyball team on winning the 2014 Virginia High School League Group 2A state title; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Amy Reed, head coach of the Gate City High School volleyball team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s achievements.
