WHEREAS, the residents of Wythe County proudly celebrate the county’s 225th anniversary in 2015; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1790, Wythe County was created from Montgomery County and named for George Wythe, the first Virginian signatory to the Declaration of Independence; and

WHEREAS, the Wythe County community of Austinville is the former county seat of Fincastle County, a defunct county that stretched from Roanoke to the Mississippi River, where the Fincastle Resolutions, a set of grievances against the British government, were drafted in 1775; and

WHEREAS, Austinville was named for Moses Austin, a leader in the lead and zinc industry, who produced shot for pioneers and settlers in the region and beyond; his son, Stephen F. Austin, went on to help found the state of Texas; and

WHEREAS, located at the confluence of I-81 and I-77, Wythe County serves as an epicenter of the eastern United States; the county is roughly equidistant from Roanoke and Bristol; Charleston, West Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina; and the Canadian border and the Florida state line, and an estimated 75,000 vehicles pass through the county each year; and

WHEREAS, thanks to its location, Wythe County enjoys a thriving tourism economy while maintaining its quaint, rural charms; the county is home to numerous hotels and restaurants, two wineries, and a variety of trails, campgrounds, and parks; and

WHEREAS, Wythe County is also home to numerous historically significant sites, such as the Jackson Ferry Shot Tower, the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum, the grave of Dr. Charles T. Pepper, and a Civil War Trail driving tour; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Wythe County on the occasion of its 225th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Wythe County as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the county’s unique history and contributions to the Commonwealth.
