HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 689
Celebrating the life of Fannie Gunst Straus Rosenthal.

WHEREAS, Fannie Gunst Straus Rosenthal of Richmond, a loving wife, mother, and friend, whose philanthropy supported numerous organizations, institutions, and schools in the greater metropolitan area, died on November 29, 2013; and

WHEREAS, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, Fannie Rosenthal moved to Richmond when she was four years old and was proud to be a lifelong resident of Virginia’s capital city; and

WHEREAS, Fannie Rosenthal’s roots in Richmond ran deep; she and her husband, Gilbert, graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, and her father and her husband both graduated from the University of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, together with her husband, Fannie Rosenthal strove to make Richmond a better place; more than 90 organizations in the Richmond region have been beneficiaries of the couple’s philanthropy; and

WHEREAS, people of all ages have been recipients of the generosity of Fannie and Gilbert Rosenthal; she was a staunch supporter of places such as the Children’s Museum of Richmond, Beth Sholom Lifecare Community, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Richmond, where the couple helped to endow a chair in Jewish and Christian Studies; and

WHEREAS, having known each other since childhood, Fannie and Gilbert Rosenthal began dating when they were teenagers and were married soon after World War II; they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2013; and

WHEREAS, Fannie Rosenthal traveled extensively with her friends and family; she stayed active with golf and tennis, and dearly enjoyed card games; she also led exercise classes at Westminster-Canterbury Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Fannie Rosenthal touched the lives of many individuals as a friend and as a caring benefactor of many organizations working to improve the Richmond area and the lives of its residents; and

WHEREAS, Fannie Rosenthal will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband, Gilbert; children, Jerry, Jean, Tom, and Nancy, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a loving mother and friend who was a generous benefactor of the community, Fannie Gunst Straus Rosenthal; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Fannie Gunst Straus Rosenthal as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
