HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 676 Offered January 16, 2015 Commending the Honorable Charles J. Maxfield. ----------

WHEREAS, the Honorable Charles J. Maxfield of Oak Hill, a former chief judge of the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, retired as a judge of the Fairfax County Circuit Court in 2014; and

WHEREAS, Charles Maxfield earned a bachelor’s degree from the United States Military Academy in 1973 and honorably served his country as a captain in the United States Army until 1979; and

WHEREAS, after completing his military service, Charles Maxfield earned a law degree from The College of William and Mary, where he served as editor of the William and Mary Law Review from 1981 to 1982; and

WHEREAS, Charles Maxfield practiced law in Fairfax County for 12 years as a partner at Dunn, McCormack, MacPherson & Maxfield; he specialized in real estate, bankruptcy, landlord-tenant, secured transactions, and Uniform Commercial Code, practicing in both state and federal courts; and

WHEREAS, beginning his career on the bench in 1992, Charles Maxfield served as a substitute judge of the Fairfax County General District Court and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of the 19th Judicial District of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Charles Maxfield was appointed as a judge of the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court in 1994 and ably served as chief judge from 2002 to 2004; and

WHEREAS, Charles Maxfield became a judge of the Fairfax County Circuit Court of the 19th Judicial Circuit of Virginia in 2007 and presided over the court with great fairness and wisdom until his well-earned retirement; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Charles Maxfield served Fairfax County and the Commonwealth with dedication and distinction; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Honorable Charles J. Maxfield on the occasion of his retirement as a judge of the Fairfax County Circuit Court; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Charles J. Maxfield as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his service to Fairfax County and the Commonwealth.
