15102815DWHEREAS, Lynchburg College women’s soccer team claimed its first national title, winning the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championship in Kansas City in December 2014; and
WHEREAS, capping an undefeated season, the Lynchburg College Hornets defeated the Williams College Ephs 4 - 3 on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw; and
WHEREAS, the Lynchburg Hornets’ stifling defense and sound goalkeeping were on full display in the championship, and the team’s high-intensity offense was held scoreless for only the first time in the season; and
WHEREAS, with a 27 -0 - 1 record, the Lynchburg College Hornets tied Division III records for wins in a season and set Old Dominion Athletic Conference records for wins, shutouts, consecutive shutouts, goals scored, and points recorded; and
WHEREAS, sophomore Samantha Bagherpour earned Lynchburg College’s first Elite 89 award, honoring the student athlete with the highest grade point average in the Division III final four; head coach Todd Olsen was named South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year and NCAA Division III Coach of the Year; and
WHEREAS, senior Angela Bosco was named as a first team All-American and the NCAA Division III Player of the Year; senior Dessi Dupuy earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year and finished her career with 105 goals for ninth place in Division III history; and
WHEREAS, fielding only five seniors, the Lynchburg College Hornets started a freshman at center back and two sophomores at outside back, ensuring a strong core of players for years to come; and
WHEREAS, the victory was a testament to the skill, hard work, and determination of each of the athletes, the able leadership of the coaches and staff, and the energetic support of the entire Lynchburg College community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Lynchburg College women’s soccer team for winning the 2014 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lynchburg College women’s soccer team as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s accomplishments.
