WHEREAS, Shirley H. Forbes of Chesapeake has been named a 2014 Woman of the Year by the Women’s Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Chesapeake; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Forbes is the government and community relations administrator at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center; she is active at the Virginia General Assembly and also represents the medical center on the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association’s HosPac board, a political action committee; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Forbes has been an influential voice in the Chesapeake and Hampton Roads business community for many years; she has focused on health care issues in the region and in the Commonwealth as a lobbyist and advocate; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Forbes also has played an active role in furthering public education, serving on the board of several local parent-teacher associations (PTAs), and she was president of the Chesapeake Council PTA for two years; she also belonged to the James Madison University Parents Council; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Forbes has spearheaded the highly successful Bra-ha-ha fund-raiser and educational event, raising thousands of dollars to help promote the importance of mammograms as an early detection tool for breast cancer; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Forbes also is chair of the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation, Inc., and in her career she has worked with many bright people in the Commonwealth; their valuable training helped prepare her when she meets in small groups with heads of state from around the world; and

WHEREAS, other organizations where Shirley Forbes has made a difference include the Chesapeake Rotary Club; former president of the Baccalaureate Committee of Chesapeake; chair of the Chesapeake Character Education Committee; and a Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Shirley H. Forbes of Chesapeake for being honored as a 2014 Woman of the Year by the Women’s Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Chesapeake; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Shirley H. Forbes as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for her many years of advocacy on behalf of Chesapeake, Hampton Roads, and the Commonwealth.
