HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 652
Celebrating the life of Talmadge Theodore Williams.

WHEREAS, Talmadge Theodore Williams of Arlington, a respected business leader, admired educator, and passionate activist who devoted his life to building stronger, more inclusive communities, died on September 27, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of Radford, Talmadge Williams honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army and enjoyed a fulfilling career in education, serving as a professor, a dean, and a developer of educational materials; and

WHEREAS, tirelessly supporting members of the Arlington community, Talmadge Williams founded and led several nonprofit organizations, including Computers 4 Students and Parent Allies for Student Success; and

WHEREAS, an inspirational and visionary leader, Talmadge Williams promoted social justice and worked to empower members of the community as a president of the Arlington branch of the NAACP; and

WHEREAS, for over 15 years, Talmadge Williams also worked diligently to secure a physical location for the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington, which currently exists as a website showcasing over 300 years of African American contributions to local history; and

WHEREAS, Talmadge Williams generously offered his time and wise leadership to many other civic and service organizations, including the Arlington County Bicentennial Celebration Task Force, the Arlington County Chief of Police Advisory Board, the George Mason University School of Education Advisory Board, the Ballston Clarendon Partnership, and the Bluemont Civic Association; and

WHEREAS, Talmadge Williams encouraged the Arlington community to invest in its future, supported fair and accountable government, and sought to create new opportunities for all Arlington residents; and

WHEREAS, Talmadge Williams will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Talmadge Theodore Williams, a pillar of the Arlington community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Talmadge Theodore Williams as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
