Commending Simon S. Lee.

WHEREAS, Simon S. Lee, chairman and chief executive officer of STG, Inc., in Reston, was awarded the George Washington University President’s Medal on November 19, 2014; and

WHEREAS, the George Washington University President’s Medal is the highest honor the university president can bestow; Simon Lee, who emigrated to the United States in 1979 from the Republic of Korea, founded STG, Inc., in 1986; and

WHEREAS, the President’s Medal recognizes people who have exhibited courage, character, and leadership in their chosen fields and who exemplify the ability of human beings to improve the lives of others; Simon Lee is the first Korean-American to receive this award; and

WHEREAS, when he moved to the United States from South Korea, Simon Lee worked as a bookkeeper to support his young family; he then became an engineer, working for several telecommunications firms in the Washington area; and

WHEREAS, STG, Inc., was a one-person firm when Simon Lee started it; today, it is a large, well-established, and expanding government information technology contractor providing performance-based solutions to many federal agencies and private industry; and

WHEREAS, Simon Lee received a bachelor’s degree and an honorary doctorate from Korea University and a master’s degree from George Washington University (GWU); he has volunteered in many roles at GWU and has helped foster a strong relationship between the two universities; and

WHEREAS, Simon Lee, who is a strong believer in the power of education to improve people’s lives, has donated money to establish exchange programs between GWU and Korea University, and he also has been a tireless and highly effective ambassador for both schools; and

WHEREAS, other honors that Simon Lee has received include the United States Department of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award; the Ellis Island Medal of Honor; the Great Overseas Korean Award, presented by KBS, the Korean Broadcasting System; and many other recognitions; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Simon S. Lee, chairman and chief executive officer of STG, Inc., in Reston, for being awarded the George Washington University President’s Medal for his courage, character, and leadership as a successful entrepreneur, supporter of higher education, and promoter of closer ties between the United States of America and the Republic of Korea; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Simon S. Lee as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his success in business and for his unswerving dedication to furthering higher education opportunities and closer ties between the United States and the Republic of Korea.
