2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, Riverside Hospital in Newport News celebrates 100 years of providing exceptional care to members of the community; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Hospital began in 1915 as a result of the visionary efforts of local business leaders, who raised $10,000 to construct a 50-bed hospital; and
WHEREAS, the original Riverside Hospital was built on Huntington Avenue; it was moved to a larger facility with 450 beds on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard in 1963; and
WHEREAS, over the course of its history, Riverside Hospital has provided more than six million days of care, treating more than one million inpatients; and
WHEREAS, during this century of service, Riverside Hospital has pioneered advanced programs in cancer treatment, neurosciences, and coronary care and established the region’s Level II Trauma Center; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Hospital’s residency program has graduated more than 976 family and OB/GYN doctors from its teaching programs and 2,162 from its School of Health Professions; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Hospital’s health care services extend throughout the Eastern and Central Virginia Regions to include Southside, Eastern Shore, Middle Peninsula, Northern Neck, Williamsburg, Richmond, Petersburg, Charlottesville, and the Peninsula; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Hospital has built the largest continuum of services to care for older adults in the Commonwealth, allowing Virginians to age in a place of their choosing; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Hospital is a pioneer in introducing electronic medical records to the region and developed one of the first electronic connectivity platforms between patient and physician, which earned the hospital the national distinction of “Most Wired” for 10 consecutive years from Hospitals and Health Networks; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Health System was one of the first health systems in the nation to receive Meaningful Use designation by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Health System has created partnerships with the University of Virginia to introduce radiosurgery and the area’s only Gamma Knife, offers graduate medical education with Virginia Commonwealth University and Eastern Virginia Medical School, and developed the Peninsula Agency on Aging; and
WHEREAS, from its humble beginnings, Riverside Hospital has grown to nearly 10,000 employees, with services in over 200 locations throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Riverside Hospital on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Riverside Hospital as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the hospital’s commitment to continue providing exceptional health services.
