HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 613
Celebrating the life of Donald Elwood Carter.

WHEREAS, Donald Elwood Carter, a successful businessman and admired community leader in Suffolk, died on September 22, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Suffolk, Donald “Don” Elwood Carter learned the value of hard work and responsibility at a young age while selling furniture with his father and brothers; and

WHEREAS, Don Carter honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War, then returned home and continued working at the family business, known today as Carter’s Quality Furniture; and

WHEREAS, over the course of his distinguished 60-year career, Don Carter helped his business expand and become an integral part of the community, known for both high-quality products and excellent customer service; and

WHEREAS, working generously to enhance the quality of life of his fellow Suffolk residents, Don Carter served as a member and past president of local Ruritan and Civitan clubs and the Retail Merchants Association for Downtown Suffolk; and

WHEREAS, Don Carter enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as an active member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church, where he served as a deacon; and

WHEREAS, Don Carter will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Edna; children, Donald, Jr., Susan, and Kathryn, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Donald Elwood Carter, a respected businessman and community leader in Suffolk; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Donald Elwood Carter as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
