HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 580 Commending the Newbern Community Christian Church and Glen Lyn Church of Christ Bible Bowl team.

WHEREAS, the Newbern Community Christian Church and Glen Lyn Church of Christ Bible Bowl team won the National Bible Bowl championship in July 2014; and

WHEREAS, Aric Porter from Newbern Community Christian Church in Pulaski County joined Noah Johnson and Grace Johnson from Glen Lyn Church of Christ in Giles County to form the team; and

WHEREAS, the Bible Bowl team participated in the Appalachian Bible Bowl League during the 2013–2014 season, competing in timed matches against other local teams to answer questions on a selected work of scripture; and

WHEREAS, the Bible Bowl team attended four regional tournaments prior to the national championship, winning tournaments at Kentucky Christian University and Cincinnati Christian University; the team also came in third place at Johnson University and ninth place at Milligan College; and

WHEREAS, at the national championship, held at the North American Christian Convention in Indianapolis, the Bible Bowl team went undefeated against teams from around the country to claim the national title; Noah Johnson also took first place in the individual tests; and

WHEREAS, the victory is a testament to the hard work and devotion of the Bible Bowl team members, the leadership of coaches Glenda Johnson and Jeanna Porter, and the support of parents, friends, and the Newbern Community Christian Church and Glen Lyn Church of Christ communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Newbern Community Christian Church and Glen Lyn Church of Christ Bible Bowl team on winning the 2014 National Bible Bowl championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to Glenda Johnson and Jeanna Porter, coaches of the Newbern Community Christian Church and Glen Lyn Church of Christ Bible Bowl team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s achievements and best wishes for the future.
