Commending the Benedictine College Preparatory school football team.

WHEREAS, the Benedictine College Preparatory school football team in Goochland County won the 2014 championship in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I competition; and

WHEREAS, the talented and tenacious Cadets of Benedictine College Preparatory school defeated an able and motivated team from Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria 23 - 7 in the title game; it was the first time in 13 years that Benedictine had claimed the trophy; and

WHEREAS, the title game was held on November 15, 2014, at Bobby Ross Stadium on the campus of Benedictine College Preparatory school in Goochland County; students, fans, alumni, family, and friends gathered to cheer the teams; and

WHEREAS, the game was tied 7 - 7 at halftime, and a Benedictine field goal gave the team a 3-point lead in the third quarter; as in earlier games during the school’s victorious 2014 season, the Cadets’ defensive play was especially strong throughout the second half of the title game; and

WHEREAS, Benedictine scored twice in the fourth quarter; the defense intercepted a pass and ran the football in for a touchdown and then recovered a fumble just minutes later, carrying the ball down to the 1-yard line and scoring a touchdown on the next play; and

WHEREAS, the exuberant crowd shared in the team’s jubilation; the win pays tribute to the hard work put forth by all of the players, who are ably led by head coach Greg Lilly and his staff; the Benedictine football team also drew support from the entire school community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Benedictine College Preparatory school football team for winning the 2014 Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Greg Lilly, head coach of the Benedictine College Preparatory school football team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and congratulations on the team’s championship season.
