Commending Lieutenant Colonel Luta Mae Cornelius McGrath, USA (Ret.).

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Luta Mae Cornelius McGrath, USA (Ret.), of Annandale, one of the nation’s oldest female veterans, celebrated her 107th birthday on November 21, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a proud citizen and an even prouder veteran of the United States Army, Luta Mae Cornelius “Cornie” McGrath enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II and served until 1961; she was a witness to history as she was stationed in Berlin, Germany, in 1947 and 1948 during the Berlin Airlift; and

WHEREAS, a native of Kentucky, Cornie McGrath was posted to many places during her career, including Fort Lee and the Military District of Washington; she married Lt. Col. Thomas J. McGrath and the couple settled in Annandale more than 50 years ago; and

WHEREAS, the military continues to be important to Cornie McGrath; she has enjoyed attending military-related events; recently, she took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, friends and faith also are cornerstones of Cornie McGrath’s life; for her 107th birthday, she received many cards, well wishes, and flowers and was given a surprise party at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Alexandria; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Lieutenant Colonel Luta Mae Cornelius McGrath, USA (Ret.), on the occasion of her 107th birthday and for her many years of service to the nation; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lieutenant Colonel Luta Mae Cornelius McGrath, USA (Ret.), as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for an exemplary life.
