Celebrating the life of David Robert Cundiff.

WHEREAS, David Robert Cundiff of Penhook, who was chair of the Franklin County Board of Supervisors, Chief of Police of Rocky Mount, a fifth-generation farmer, and a devoted husband and father, died on October 24, 2014; and

WHEREAS, David Cundiff, who was known to his friends and family as Buddy, was a highly regarded public servant; he had worked for 30 years for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, retiring in 2007 with the rank of lieutenant of investigations; and

WHEREAS, in 2010, David Cundiff became Chief of Police for the Town of Rocky Mount; he was proud to serve and was held in high esteem by fellow members of the law-enforcement community for a lifetime of experience and knowledge, his investigative skills, the care he showed to his employees, and his leadership; and

WHEREAS, as police chief, David Cundiff helped make Rocky Mount a safer and more secure place to live and work; he focused on reducing the crime rate, drug enforcement, wise use of police resources, and officer development; and

WHEREAS, those talents and experiences also made David Cundiff a valued and respected member and leader of the Franklin County Board of Supervisors; he was elected to the board in 2007 and reelected in 2011 and had served as chair since 2012; and

WHEREAS, David Cundiff was admired for his work on the Franklin County Board of Supervisors; he was a bold and decisive leader, addressing contentious issues by making sure that all sides were heard and trying to achieve consensus on the often difficult matters the board faced; and

WHEREAS, at his farm in Union Hall, where he was a fifth-generation farmer, David Cundiff raised tobacco, beef cattle, and grain; he had been president of the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association and was a member of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission; and

WHEREAS, David Cundiff also served his community as a lifetime member and past president of the Glade Hill Rescue Squad; additionally, he belonged to the Franklin County Farm Bureau, where he was president, the Extension Leadership Council of the Virginia Cooperative Extension, and the Penhook Ball Park; and

WHEREAS, David Cundiff will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Tina; their son, Ethan; his mother, Dorothy; and by many other family members, friends, members of the law-enforcement community, and the people of Franklin County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of David Robert Cundiff, who was an admired and respected chair of the Franklin County Board of Supervisors, Chief of Police of the Town of Rocky Mount, and a successful farmer and devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of David Robert Cundiff as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
