Commending Jim Day.

WHEREAS, Jim Day, a deeply respected law-enforcement officer, retired as the Chief of the Bedford Police Department in September 2014 after 34 years of dedicated service; and

WHEREAS, after beginning his professional career as a real estate agent in Roanoke, Jim Day joined the Roanoke Police Department in 1980, rising through the ranks to become Deputy Chief; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, Jim Day was named Chief of the Bedford Police Department; he ably guided the department through a period of transition when Bedford reverted from a city to a town, greatly increasing the department’s jurisdiction; and

WHEREAS, under Jim Day’s leadership, the Bedford Police Department improved communication with local residents through an increased presence on social media and additional public meetings; and

WHEREAS, Jim Day also helped the department achieve reaccreditation twice and instituted a bike patrol to better serve and protect the community; and

WHEREAS, admired for his professionalism, dedication, and integrity, Jim Day was a trusted leader of and mentor to the 24 officers and three civilian employees of the Bedford Police Department, and he leaves a legacy of excellence to the department and his successor as Chief; and

WHEREAS, Jim Day plans to spend his well-earned retirement with his beloved family, and he will continue to serve the community as a volunteer at the Agape Center in Moneta; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Jim Day on the occasion of his retirement as Chief of the Bedford Police Department; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jim Day as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his diligent service to the residents of Roanoke and Bedford and best wishes on a happy retirement.
