2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, V. Ray Hancock, a dedicated educator and community leader, has worked to enhance the quality of life of his fellow residents of the Emory and Washington County communities for many years; and
WHEREAS, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, Ray Hancock joined many of the other young men of his generation in service to his country during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Ray Hancock earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, and a doctorate from Tulane University, then answered his calling to become an educator; and
WHEREAS, Ray Hancock helped prepare students for success in careers and responsible citizenship of the Commonwealth as a mathematics professor at Emory & Henry College for 28 years; and
WHEREAS, respected among his peers, Ray Hancock served as treasurer of the Mathematical Association of America and cofounder of the Appalachian Regional Mathematics Seminar; and
WHEREAS, Ray Hancock gave generously of his time and wise leadership as a longtime member of the Boy Scouts of America, serving on the Sequoia Council Executive Board and as public relations chair of the Pellissippi District Committee; and
WHEREAS, Ray Hancock served the Commonwealth as a presidential elector in 1992 and, together with his late wife, Ruth, he has also been an active member of the United Methodist Church, Alpha Phi Omega, and the local Republican Party; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend V. Ray Hancock for his years of service to the residents of the Emory and Washington County communities; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to V. Ray Hancock as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his many contributions to the community and the Commonwealth.
