WHEREAS, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors honored the memory of those individuals who died during or survived the Holocaust by naming April 21 as the Holocaust Day of Remembrance in Fairfax County; and

WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945; during that period, six million Jews were murdered; and

WHEREAS, Roma, people with disabilities, and Poles were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic, or ideological reasons; millions more, including homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war, and political dissidents, also suffered grievous oppression and death; and

WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and

WHEREAS, the people of the Commonwealth remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution, and tyranny; and

WHEREAS, all individuals have the right to life and liberty, including freedom of conscience, thought, and religion, and the people of the Commonwealth are actively dedicated to the principles of individual freedom in a just society; and

WHEREAS, national Days of Remembrance, which coincide with the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp by American soldiers, have been set aside so that the people of the United States may remember the victims of the Holocaust and reflect on the need for respect for all peoples; and

WHEREAS, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors designated April 21, in 2014 and in each succeeding year, as the Holocaust Day of Remembrance in Fairfax County to call to mind the tragedies of the event and honor those individuals who were affected, living or deceased, and remember their courage, forbearance, and strength; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for naming April 21 as the Holocaust Day of Remembrance in Fairfax County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and respect.
