HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5009 Commending the Salem High School of Salem boys' basketball team.

WHEREAS, the Salem High School of Salem boys’ basketball team ended an extraordinary season by winning the 2012 - 2013 Virginia High School League Group AA, Division 4 state championship title; and

WHEREAS, the Salem High School boys’ basketball team started off the season with eight losses in the first 12 games but battled back to take Region IV runner-up honors and advance to the state quarterfinals; and

WHEREAS, the Salem High School Spartans then defeated Heritage High School from Lynchburg and Potomac Falls High School to face Grafton High School in the state championship game; and

WHEREAS, the Salem High School boys’ basketball team started off slow with Grafton High School scoring the first nine points, but came from behind to take the lead and advance to a state championship victory, the school’s third since 1994; and

WHEREAS, senior Matt Hill led the Salem High School Spartans with 20 of the team’s 56 points, while Kevin Garst, head coach and member of the school’s 1994 championship team, provided expert guidance; and

WHEREAS, the Salem High School boys’ basketball win, coupled with the school’s girls’ basketball team win, marked the first time since 2007 that a Virginia school’s girls’ and boys’ basketball teams won a state championship in the same year; and

WHEREAS, the triumph of the Salem High School boys’ basketball team is a tribute to the perseverance and hard work of the entire team, the leadership of head coach Kevin Garst and his staff, and the support of the Salem High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Salem High School of Salem boys’ basketball team on winning the 2012 - 2013 Virginia High School League Group AA, Division 4 state basketball championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kevin Garst, head coach of the Salem High School of Salem boys’ basketball team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s remarkable season.
