SUMMARY AS PASSED SENATE: (all summaries)

Virginia Retirement System; certain local employees. Allows that a political subdivision may by resolution irrevocably declare that persons employed as firefighters, emergency medical technicians, or law-enforcement officers shall be considered to have 60 months of creditable service as of January 1, 2013, for purposes of the Virginia Retirement System. Current law allows political subdivisions to declare that such employees are not considered persons who became members on or after July 1, 2010, for purposes of the Virginia Retirement System. The bill also declares that if the political subdivision adopts such a resolution, those employees shall not be eligible to participate in the new hybrid retirement program.
