SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 49
Commending Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.

WHEREAS, Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Colonial Williamsburg celebrates the 50th anniversary of its acclaimed Gold Course in 2013; and

WHEREAS, with golf gaining popularity in the United States, the Williamsburg Inn began offering golf on a nine-hole course at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in 1947; and

WHEREAS, the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course opened in 1963 as the first 18-hole golf course available at the club; the course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the leading expert on golf course design in America, who called the Gold Course his “finest” work; and

WHEREAS, featuring sloped landing areas, long approaches to small greens, and one of the first island greens, the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course gained a reputation as one of the best and most challenging courses in the country; and

WHEREAS, in the 1990s, Rees Jones, the son of the original designer, updated the course to accommodate players with higher handicaps; later renovations modernized the irrigation system and improved cart paths to ensure a more enjoyable experience for golfers; and

WHEREAS, today, the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course remains a vivid example of traditional golf architecture and is the epitome of the championship golf experience; golfers from around the country visit the Commonwealth to try their hands on the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course; and

WHEREAS, many professional golfers have played on the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course, including golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who set the course record of 67 strokes; the course has earned several accolades, including being named one of the top 100 public courses by Golf Digest; and

WHEREAS, renowned for its scenic vistas, the lovingly maintained Golden Horseshoe Gold Course is an example of the natural beauty found throughout the Commonwealth; in 2001, the course was named a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by the Audubon Society; and

WHEREAS, over the course of its long history, Golden Horseshoe Golf Club has contributed greatly to the reputation of Colonial Williamsburg as a world-class destination; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Golden Horseshoe Golf Club hereby be commended on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its renowned Gold Course; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Golden Horseshoe Golf Club as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for the club’s storied history and best wishes for continued success.
