Commending the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

WHEREAS, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office coordinated with several local agencies to successfully locate and rescue two lost children on January 25, 2013; and

WHEREAS, deputies of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding two young children who had been missing for approximately 30 minutes; and

WHEREAS, facing hazardous weather conditions and below-freezing temperatures, the deputies realized the importance of finding the children before nightfall and called for support from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team; and

WHEREAS, in less than an hour, the incident commander with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office had set up a command post and enlisted help from other local agencies, including the Fairfax County Police Department, Spotsylvania Fire and Rescue and Emergency Management Services, and the Virginia Conservation Police; and

WHEREAS, the members of the rescue team promptly began a grid search from the last place the children were seen; after a bloodhound picked up the children’s scent, they were spotted by an infrared camera on a police helicopter; and

WHEREAS, the children, who had become lost while playing in the snow, were found nearly a half mile from their yard; they were unharmed and were happily reunited with their family due to the exceptional efforts of the rescue team; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office and all members of the rescue team exemplify the integrity, bravery, and selflessness displayed by police and first responders throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office hereby be commended for coordinating a successful rescue effort of two lost children on January 25, 2013; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for the department’s professionalism and commitment to protecting the residents of Spotsylvania County.
