2013 SESSION
13104034DWHEREAS, the Charles City County Social Services Brown Bag Program has been a valuable resource to the senior citizens of Charles City County for the past 12 years; and
WHEREAS, the Brown Bag Program was created in 2000 by the Charles City County Social Services Board with the support of the Charles City County Board of Supervisors; the program was coordinated by Marcie P. Jones and social services staff in collaboration with the Central Virginia Food Bank/FeedMore; and
WHEREAS, Charles City County provided the manpower, Daniel Green, who transported food from the food bank and was assisted with unloading in the county by Burrell Bassett, Ernest Brooks, Lloyd Brooks, Thomas Jones, and Harrison Jones; and
WHEREAS, the Brown Bag Program has over 75 volunteers coordinated by Natasha C. Smith with students from Charles City High School, Junior ROTC, and senior citizens that assist with preparation and distribution of food; and
WHEREAS, the initial volunteers—Glenda Adkins, Joyce Carter, Mildred Christian, Sarah Craddock, Loretta Crawley, Russell Crawley, Juanita Thorne, and Grace Woodley—have been faithful in assisting with bagging food for the seniors; and
WHEREAS, the seniors have been assisted in transporting the “Brown Bag” to their vehicles by volunteers Fred Adkins, Larry Bowen, Ross Haith, Robert Marston, and Everette Williams; and
WHEREAS, the Brown Bag Program was created to provide a nutritional food program to approximately 75 households, which has increased to 675 households consisting of senior citizens 60 years of age and older; and
WHEREAS, the Brown Bag Program fiscal controls have been managed by Regina B. Harris, assisted by Alberta E. Black, and has received financial stability with the support of Louise Lewis Foster’s family through the Flagler and Foster Foundations; and
WHEREAS, the Brown Bag Program has been recognized by the Central Virginia Food Bank/FeedMore as a Model Rural Agency Partner, Model Agency Partner-Elderly, and an Outstanding Model Program…. “that none shall go hungry”; and
WHEREAS, the Brown Bag Program has been recognized with an Acts of Caring Award by the National Association of Counties, which acknowledges top volunteer programs in the country; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Charles City County Social Services Brown Bag Program hereby be commended on the occasion of its 12th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Charles City County Social Services Brown Bag Program as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s congratulations and admiration for the program’s commitment to serving seniors in Charles City County.
