13101608DWHEREAS, United States Army Staff Sergeant Guy Stanley Hagy, Jr., a native of the small community of Thompson Valley in Tazewell County, died in the line of duty on September 13, 2004, in Baghdad, Iraq; and
WHEREAS, born and raised in rural Thompson Valley, Guy “Stan” Hagy graduated from Tazewell High School and joined the United States Army in 1996; and
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Hagy was stationed in Oahu, Hawaii, and Fort Lewis, Washington, before being transferred to Fort Hood, Texas, as a member of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary Division in 2003; and
WHEREAS, known for his cheerful, helpful manner and sense of humor, Staff Sergeant Hagy easily made friends wherever he was stationed and earned the respect of his fellow soldiers and superiors for his commitment to them and serving the country; and
WHEREAS, a mortar crewman, Staff Sergeant Hagy became the first person from Tazewell County to lose his life in Operation Iraqi Freedom when an improvised explosive device detonated near his observation post; and
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Hagy’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; and
WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Hagy will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his many loving family members, friends, and fellow soldiers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic soldier, Staff Sergeant Guy Stanley Hagy, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Staff Sergeant Guy Stanley Hagy, Jr., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
