2013 SESSION
13105213DWHEREAS, Laurel Tucker Duplessis, a respected educator, talented artist, and resident of the City of Hampton, died on February 8, 2013; and
WHEREAS, a native of the Bronx, New York, Laurel Duplessis studied at City University of New York, earned a bachelor’s degree from Massachusetts College of Art, and received a master’s degree from Hampton University; and
WHEREAS, a skilled artist, Laurel Duplessis has had her works exhibited at many national and international venues; in 1992, she was commissioned by her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, to create a painting reflecting the ideals of its Summit III, “Preparing Our Sons for Manhood” programs; and
WHEREAS, Laurel Duplessis later served on Delta Sigma Theta’s National Commission of Arts and Letters and was honored by the sorority as a recipient of the prestigious Keeper of the Flame Award; and
WHEREAS, an enthusiastic educator, Laurel Duplessis taught college courses on art, art history, and the humanities, inspiring countless students to follow their artistic passions; and
WHEREAS, an expert on African American art, Laurel Duplessis offered her knowledge and experience to the public as a curator at museums and research centers in Virginia and New York City; and
WHEREAS, Laurel Duplessis was also an accomplished author; she completed a booklet on collecting African American art and wrote an essay for the Encyclopedia of African American Culture and History; and
WHEREAS, Laurel Duplessis will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband, Errol; children, Lauren and Arem, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Laurel Tucker Duplessis, an educator, artist, and friend to many in the City of Hampton; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Laurel Tucker Duplessis as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
