Celebrating the life of the Honorable Gordon Duane Holloway.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Gordon Duane Holloway, an esteemed circuit court judge who served Virginia’s Ninth Judicial Circuit with great dedication and fairness for 15 years, including two years as chief judge, died on December 11, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a native of Poquoson, Gordon “Duane” Holloway graduated from Poquoson High School, where he served as senior class president and lettered in football and basketball; in 1988, he had the honor of returning to his alma mater to give the commencement address; and

WHEREAS, Duane Holloway earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Military Institute and a law degree from the College of William and Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law before embarking on a distinguished legal career; and

WHEREAS, in 1957, Duane Holloway was appointed a substitute judge for York County; two years later, at the age of 28, he took office as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for York County and ably served for more than a decade; and

WHEREAS, Duane Holloway continued to serve the Commonwealth on the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and Hampton Roads Sanitation District Commission until his election in 1980 as Circuit Court Judge for the Ninth Judicial Circuit; and

WHEREAS, for 15 years, including two years as chief judge, Judge Holloway presided over a wide variety of cases, earning the respect of his peers, courtroom staff, and attorneys who came to the bench; and

WHEREAS, Judge Holloway possessed a formidable knowledge of the law and strong commitment to justice, and made many contributions to the judiciary throughout his tenure; and

WHEREAS, Judge Holloway took an active role in community affairs, helping organize the Virginia Waterman’s Association, earning the York County Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, and serving as the grand marshal of the 1986 Poquoson Seafood Festival parade; and

WHEREAS, a man of many interests, Judge Holloway enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life and combined that with his love of travel in 1964 when he went on a big-game hunting safari to Mozambique; in retirement, he continued to travel with his wife, published a family history, enjoyed gardening, studied history, and spent time with his children and grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Judge Holloway faithfully served his community, the Commonwealth, and the interests of justice with great integrity and wisdom; and

WHEREAS, Duane Holloway will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 61 years, Patricia; children, Steven, John, William, and James, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired jurist, the Honorable Gordon Duane Holloway; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable Gordon Duane Holloway as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
