2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, Mosby Woods Elementary School in Fairfax County celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2013; and
WHEREAS, Mosby Woods Elementary School was founded on September 3, 1963, on a historical site associated with John S. Mosby, a commander in the American Civil War; and
WHEREAS, with a diverse, international student population from the Vienna and Fairfax areas, Mosby Woods Elementary School promotes the value of multiculturalism in the strengthening of American ideals; the 940 students at the school come from over 40 different countries and speak 28 different languages; and
WHEREAS, a fully accredited learning institution, Mosby Woods Elementary School reports accreditation pass rates of nearly 100 percent in all subjects; and
WHEREAS, the teaching staff of Mosby Woods Elementary School uses early childhood education techniques to ensure the best possible learning environment for students; and
WHEREAS, offering programs with different approaches to learning, Mosby Woods Elementary School is equipped to accommodate any type of learner; the high standards throughout the school motivate all students to learn to think critically and creatively; and
WHEREAS, leading by example, the dedicated staff at Mosby Woods Elementary School strives to instill the importance of respect, hard work, accountability, and honesty in each student; and
WHEREAS, providing a wide range of opportunities for students, Mosby Woods Elementary School provides mentoring and tutoring initiatives through Oakton High School and partners with Lockheed Martin Corporation; and
WHEREAS, Mosby Woods Elementary School is known for its partnership with the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and participates in the Changing Education Through the Arts program; and
WHEREAS, for the past 10 years, Mosby Woods Elementary School has focused on arts integration in its curriculum; students have also engaged in many art and music programs, including classes and performances; and
WHEREAS, Mosby Woods Elementary School offers many extracurricular activities and events, including a chess club, a science club, foreign language programs, museum programs, Einstein night, and a geography bee; and
WHEREAS, Mosby Woods Elementary School encourages students to become involved in the community through a service-oriented student government program; and
WHEREAS, displaying further involvement with parents and the community, Mosby Woods Elementary School hosts a variety of programs, including a parent volunteer program, curriculum meetings, social activities, and cultural arts events; and
WHEREAS, in the past nine years, through its Walk for the Homeless program, Mosby Woods Elementary School has raised over $180,000 to benefit the homeless; and
WHEREAS, Mosby Woods Elementary School has won several awards, including the Title 1 Distinguished School Award in 2006 and 2007 for outstanding achievements on Virginia Standards of Learning tests, the 2010 Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award, and the 2011 Virginia Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence; and
WHEREAS, from 2005 to 2011, Mosby Woods Elementary School met adequate yearly progress goals for No Child Left Behind in all subgroup populations; the school was also named as one of the 2012 “Best Elementary Schools” by Northern Virginia magazine; and
WHEREAS, Mosby Woods Elementary School serves the public by ensuring that the Fairfax area’s future leaders receive the best possible education; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Mosby Woods Elementary School on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mahri Aste, principal of Mosby Woods Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s continuing tradition of academic excellence and contributions to the community.
