2013 SESSION
13105295DWHEREAS, the Providence Presbyterian Church Upward Basketball League, a faith-based sports league in Fairfax County, celebrates the completion of its fifth season in March 2013; and
WHEREAS, partnering with churches, Upward Sports encourages the use of athletic programs to teach life lessons in a positive environment; the Providence Presbyterian Church Upward Basketball League (Providence Upward Basketball League) has nearly doubled in size since its first season in 2008; and
WHEREAS, in the 2012 - 2013 season, the Providence Upward Basketball League served approximately 300 children on 36 teams; the league has thrived due to the dedication of many volunteers, who have filled roles as coaches and referees and in many other positions throughout the league; and
WHEREAS, the Providence Upward Basketball League emphasizes healthy competition, sportsmanship, and having fun in a supportive, faith-based environment; the league ensures that “every child plays, every child learns, and every child is a winner”; and
WHEREAS, the rules and procedures of the Providence Upward Basketball League promote equal teams, equal play time, and equal opportunities; students of all skill and experience levels are encouraged to join the league; and
WHEREAS, to ensure inclusiveness, the Providence Upward Basketball League generously offers scholarships to students who cannot afford program costs; and
WHEREAS, Providence Upward Basketball League has helped hundreds of children learn new skills and grow in a positive environment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Providence Presbyterian Church Upward Basketball League on the completion of its fifth season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Providence Presbyterian Church Upward Basketball League as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s commitment to serving the youth of the Commonwealth.
