2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, Melvin S. Harmon, Jr., a dedicated music teacher and an active member of the Winchester community, died on February 4, 2013; and
WHEREAS, a native of the City of Winchester, Melvin “Jim” Harmon earned a bachelor’s degree from Shenandoah College and Conservatory and a master’s degree from The George Washington University; and
WHEREAS, Jim Harmon began a long, fulfilling career in public education in the Tidewater area; he later served as the choral director at John Handley High School in the City of Winchester and as the music supervisor for Loudoun County Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, a passionate and inspirational teacher, Jim Harmon passed his love of music on to countless young people throughout the Commonwealth; his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of his students; and
WHEREAS, serving on the Frederick County School Board, Jim Harmon was a steadfast advocate for the youth of the county and worked to ensure that they received the highest quality education; and
WHEREAS, a tireless volunteer who cared deeply for his fellow Winchester residents, Jim Harmon worked to strengthen educational institutions and promote the arts as a member of many music-related boards and organizations; and
WHEREAS, Jim Harmon enjoyed faith and fellowship with the community as a 26-year member of Winchester First United Methodist Church, where he served as the choir director and as a member of several committees; and
WHEREAS, Jim Harmon is greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Melody; son, Matthew, and his family; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Melvin S. Harmon, Jr., a devoted educator in the City of Winchester; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Melvin S. Harmon, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
