Celebrating the life of Robert James Sullivan, Jr.

WHEREAS, Robert James Sullivan, Jr., a dedicated public servant, respected educator, and an active, lifelong resident of the City of Harrisonburg, died on February 4, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Robert “Bobby” Sullivan was a graduate of Harrisonburg High School; he remained a proud alumnus of the school throughout his life and was recognized as the Harrisonburg Blue Streaks’ biggest fan when he was inducted into the Harrisonburg High School Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class of 2008; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Sullivan received a bachelor’s degree from Mount Saint Mary’s College and earned a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh; he went on to honorably serve his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Sullivan became the city planner for the City of Harrisonburg in 1965 and skillfully guided the city through periods of great transition and growth; he retired after more than 25 years of exemplary leadership; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Sullivan also supported the community as an adjunct professor at James Madison University for over 35 years; known as an outstanding teacher, he used his real-world experiences to provide unique insights to his students and motivated them to achieve greatness in and out of the classroom; and

WHEREAS, gaining a wealth of knowledge about the area throughout his life, Bobby Sullivan became known as the unofficial historian of the City of Harrisonburg; he enriched the lives of his fellow residents with walking tours of the city; and

WHEREAS, a tireless volunteer, Bobby Sullivan was a member of the Rockingham Public Library Board, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and the Knights of Columbus; he enjoyed faith and fellowship with the community as a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church; and

WHEREAS, Bobby Sullivan will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Kathleen; children, Ellen, Mary, Laura, Paul, and Brian, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Robert James Sullivan, Jr., a loyal public servant, dedicated educator, and pillar of the Harrisonburg community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert James Sullivan, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
