Celebrating the life of James Stephen Harr.

WHEREAS, James Stephen Harr, a respected public servant and an invaluable friend in the City of Danville, died on January 30, 2013; and

WHEREAS, James “Jim” Harr was born to Charles and Norma Shoun Harr and graduated from Ferrum College; and

WHEREAS, in 1977, Jim Harr began a long, loyal career with the City of Danville; he served the city in the Parks and Recreation department, then moved to the Public Works department in 1985; and

WHEREAS, in 1996, Jim Harr transferred to the Utilities department, where he had been serving as a director; and

WHEREAS, throughout his storied career, Jim Harr impressed his fellow employees as a cheerful friend, a trusted confidant, a clear communicator, and a respected leader; and

WHEREAS, Jim Harr’s dedication to his work and the community was unparalleled; he went out of his way to assist his fellow employees and promptly responded to calls at all hours of the day or night; and

WHEREAS, Jim Harr donated his time and wealth of knowledge to many other organizations, including as the president of the Danville City Employees Federal Credit Union and a past president of both the Harvest Jubilee and Festival in the Park; and

WHEREAS, an enthusiastic volunteer, especially for his daughters’ activities, Jim Harr was involved with the Shady Knoll 4-H clubs and coached T-ball and softball; also passionate about horses, Jim Harr kept his own stable and was involved with the Averett University Equestrian Center; and

WHEREAS, known for his generosity and genuine concern for others, Jim Harr made one last selfless contribution after his death when, at his request, his corneas were donated to restore sight to two individuals; and

WHEREAS, a devoted husband and father, Jim Harr is greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Dianne; daughters, Mary and Valerie; and many other family members, friends, and coworkers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of James Stephen Harr, a devoted public servant and irreplaceable friend to many in the City of Danville; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James Stephen Harr as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
