2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, Henry L. Stevenson, Sr., a beloved coach at I.C. Norcom High School who served as an inspirational role model to youth in Portsmouth, died on January 17, 2013; and
WHEREAS, a native of Portsmouth, Henry “Barney” Stevenson graduated from I.C. Norcom High School, where he was the team captain for the boys’ basketball team that captured the state championship title; and
WHEREAS, Barney Stevenson proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State College, now University; and
WHEREAS, Barney Stevenson enjoyed a 35-year career at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where he made many contributions to the company as a skilled and dedicated employee; and
WHEREAS, Barney Stevenson remained involved in youth athletics throughout his adult life, serving as director of the Churchland Basketball Association and volunteering for various sports organizations in the Hampton Roads area; he also played with the senior softball league for more than three decades; and
WHEREAS, a loyal alumnus of I.C. Norcom High School, Barney Stevenson served as committee chair, vice president, and president of the school’s alumni association and had the distinct honor of returning to his alma mater to serve as the assistant coach for the boys’ varsity basketball team; and
WHEREAS, an exemplary role model, Barney Stevenson generously gave of his time and talents to positively influence the youth with whom he worked; and
WHEREAS, Barney Stevenson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Hedy; son, B.J.; mother, Constance; numerous other family members and friends; the I.C. Norcom High School community; and area youth whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of Portsmouth, Henry L. Stevenson, Sr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Henry L. Stevenson, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
