Commending Douglas Waller.

WHEREAS, Douglas Waller, a deputy with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, is commended for his courageous service to the Grayson County community; and

WHEREAS, on June 26, 2012, Douglas Waller responded with another deputy to a domestic disturbance call; and

WHEREAS, as Douglas Waller approached the front door, a person in the house opened fire and shot him; and

WHEREAS, the bullet, deflected by the bulletproof vest that Douglas Waller conscientiously wears, hit him in the lower abdomen; and

WHEREAS, Douglas Waller took cover behind a vehicle with his fellow officer, who also returned fire; and

WHEREAS, after the shooter relinquished his weapon, Douglas Waller was transported to Twin County Regional Hospital and then flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for nearly four hours; and

WHEREAS, a faithful public servant who took an oath to protect and serve, Douglas Waller demonstrated great character, strength, and determination during the ordeal and his recovery; and

WHEREAS, the perilous situation Douglas Waller faced while responding to a call is a reminder of the dangers encountered daily by those who serve in law enforcement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Douglas Waller for his courageous service to the Grayson County community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Douglas Waller as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his bravery and commitment to serving his fellow residents.
