2013 SESSION
13104014DWHEREAS, Henry Clay Clark, an admired attorney, noted businessman, and respected civic leader who made many contributions to the Harrisonburg community, died on January 11, 2013; and
WHEREAS, born and raised in Stuart in Patrick County, Henry Clark graduated from Bluefield College and joined the other young men of his generation in proudly serving his country during World War II as a pilot for the United States Navy; and
WHEREAS, after his honorable service, Henry Clark earned a bachelor’s degree and law degree from Washington and Lee University before relocating with his wife, Mary, to her hometown of Harrisonburg; and
WHEREAS, Henry Clark established a successful law firm, eventually known as Clark and Bradshaw, and practiced law for the next 64 years while also taking an active role in community affairs; and
WHEREAS, known for his knowledge of the law and business savvy, Henry Clark specialized in land use, zoning, real estate, and business organizations, serving his clients with great diligence and earning the respect of his colleagues; and
WHEREAS, Henry Clark made many contributions to his profession as president of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Bar Association, council member of the Virginia State Bar, and member of the Virginia Bar Association and American Bar Association; and
WHEREAS, Henry Clark played an important role in the economic development of the Harrisonburg region, including the openings of popular Massanutten and Bryce Resorts, through his legal work and service with a host of community organizations and committees; and
WHEREAS, Henry Clark also served as a judge for the Harrisonburg Police Court and was appointed Commissioner in Chancery by the Rockingham Circuit Court; and
WHEREAS, Henry Clark served as president of the Harrisonburg Lions Club, charter trustee of the United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, chair of the Harrisonburg and Rockingham Democratic Committees, and deacon, elder, and commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church as a member of First Presbyterian Church on Court Square; and
WHEREAS, Henry Clark earned numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including a Tradition of Excellence Award and the first Outstanding General Practitioner Award from the Virginia State Bar and recognition as Businessman of the Year from the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, a respected leader, Henry Clark served his profession with great distinction and made many contributions to the well-being and prosperity of his fellow residents; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by his daughter, Susan, Henry Clark leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Mary; children, Jeffrey and Clay, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a valued member of the Harrisonburg community, Henry Clay Clark; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Henry Clay Clark as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
