13104809DWHEREAS, Rebecca Beall Jackson Graves, the senior vice president of Luray Caverns Corporation and an active member of the Town of Luray, died on April 6, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Rebecca Graves was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, on September 27, 1922, to the late John Murchison Jackson, Sr., and Rebecca Beall Gates; and
WHEREAS, graduating cum laude from the University of Miami in 1943, Rebecca Graves was a member of Chi Omega sorority, the Nu Kappa Tau chapter of Mortar Board, and Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity; and
WHEREAS, in 1944, Rebecca Graves married Henry Theodore Northcott Graves, who would go on to become president and chair of the board for Luray Caverns Corporation; and
WHEREAS, after becoming involved with the family business, Rebecca Graves worked at Luray Caverns Corporation and its affiliates for the rest of her life, eventually becoming the senior vice president of the company; and
WHEREAS, under Rebecca and Henry Graves’ leadership, Luray Caverns Corporation has delighted millions of visitors from around the country and the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, active in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at all levels, Rebecca Graves served as the national curator general, the Virginia state regent, and the regent of the John Rhodes Chapter in Luray; and
WHEREAS, Rebecca Graves served as a member of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, the National Society Daughters of Colonial Wars, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy; and
WHEREAS, Rebecca Graves loved music and played the organ at Christ Episcopal Church, her church in the Town of Luray; she also sang in the Shenandoah Valley Choral Society and the Page County Community Choir; and
WHEREAS, devoting a great deal of time to the community, Rebecca Graves served as a member of the board of the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival and was a dedicated member of several other civic organizations; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Henry, and her son, Harry, Rebecca Graves is survived by six children, Rebecca, Cornelia, John, James, Katherine, and Elizabeth, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Rebecca Beall Jackson Graves, a pillar in the Luray community; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Rebecca Beall Jackson Graves as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
