SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 391
Commending Friends of the Reston Regional Library.

WHEREAS, Friends of the Reston Regional Library was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, Inc., with a prestigious 2013 Best of Reston Award in the Civic/Community Organization category; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston Awards were established to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the greater Reston community and improving the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Reston Regional Library, a volunteer organization formed in 1972, supports programs, activities, literacy efforts, and technology for the library by raising funds and awareness; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Reston Regional Library, with approximately 250 members, provided books, e-books, and materials valued at more than $100,000, assisted with early literacy programs, and raised additional funds to support Head Start students; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Reston Regional Library played a pivotal role in the installation of a WiFi hub, big screen monitors, service desks, signs, and shelving as well as the upgrade of meeting spaces and study areas; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Reston Regional Library supports the English as a Second Language program, promotes the library at community events, and collaborates with the Reston Garden Club in its annual beautification projects at the library grounds; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Reston Regional Library raises funds to support the library by selling donated books, CDs, and videotapes at its various book sales held throughout the year; many selfless volunteers generously give of their time to sort, collect, and set up the items at these events; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Reston Regional Library has helped other Fairfax County libraries by sharing technological advances and has won numerous awards over the years for its outstanding service to the library and community; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Reston Regional Library is led by board president, Brian Jacoby; vice president, Michael Kenney; secretary, Helen Fedor; treasurer, Jennifer Scutella; and members at large Dave Little, Rik Karlsson, John Morris, and Roxane Hughes; and

WHEREAS, Friends of the Reston Regional Library has enhanced Reston Regional Library’s offerings and helped make it an inviting community gathering place; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Friends of the Reston Regional Library on its many contributions to Reston and on its well-deserved honor as a 2013 Best of Reston Award recipient in the Civic/Community Organization category; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Friends of the Reston Regional Library as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for the organization’s tireless dedication to Reston.
