WHEREAS, William G. Bouie was honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, Inc., with the prestigious Robert E. Simon Lifetime Achievement Award; and

WHEREAS, the Robert E. Simon Lifetime Achievement Award was established as a lifetime achievement honor to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to serving the Reston community and improving the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, William “Bill” Bouie, a telecommunications executive named as the Washington Business Journal Minority Business Leader of the Year for 2009, has been a longtime resident of Reston and supporter of many of its organizations and initiatives that have enhanced the quality of life for his fellow residents; and

WHEREAS, a former pro slow-pitch softball player and high school coach and athletic director, Bill Bouie learned many valuable lessons early in life about teamwork, communication, and overcoming obstacles; and

WHEREAS, Bill Bouie has continued to support youth through his involvement with and leadership of Reston Youth Baseball, Reston Little League, and the Fairfax County PIT Teen Center, which provide opportunities for local young people to develop their skills and enjoy wholesome recreation; and

WHEREAS, Bill Bouie’s commitment to making recreational and leisure opportunities available to all residents of Reston has also been evident in his role as a former member of the Fairfax County Athletic Council, chair of the Fairfax County Park Authority board, board member of the Reston YMCA, and numerous roles, including chair, within the Reston Community Center; and

WHEREAS, Bill Bouie also served as a member of Project Gold 2000 for the U.S. Olympic Committee, which works to improve minority and female participation in Olympics-related sports organizations; and

WHEREAS, Bill Bouie served as the first president of Friends of Reston for Community Projects, Inc., and as the principal volunteer in the endeavor to raise funds for the Reston Nature House, which opened in 2009 to provide environmental education to the community; and

WHEREAS, passionate about the importance and power of the arts, Bill Bouie serves on the Associates Board of Directors for the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts; and

WHEREAS, as a founding member and vice chair of the board of directors of the Initiative for Public Art—Reston, Bill Bouie has worked alongside other art lovers and community supporters to create a public art master plan for Reston; and

WHEREAS, a previous Best of Reston award winner who was also named Lord Fairfax, Bill Bouie is a man of great vision who brings to all of his endeavors a cheerful attitude, belief in the innate goodness of all individuals, and conviction that individuals from all walks of life working together can create great things for the community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend William G. Bouie on his outstanding service to the residents of Northern Virginia and on his well-deserved honor as the 2013 Robert E. Simon Lifetime Achievement Award recipient; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to William G. Bouie as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations, admiration, and respect for his lifetime of commitment to the Reston community.
