WHEREAS, in 2012, The Central Virginian, a trusted newspaper based in the Town of Louisa, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its establishment; and
WHEREAS, first published in 1912, The Central Virginian offered perspectives on local and world events by collecting and compiling news stories from a variety of outlets; and
WHEREAS, with a simple layout that would be unfamiliar to the modern public, The Central Virginian covered everything from local church socials and youth meetings to the RMS Titanic and the World’s Fair; and
WHEREAS, a key resource for local farmers, The Central Virginian provided essential agricultural information to rural Louisa County; the newspaper often carried weather reports, farm reports, and livestock pricing; and
WHEREAS, during the 1950s and 1960s, The Central Virginian began to cover Louisa High School sports, local scouting groups, and notices on residents entering military service; and
WHEREAS, The Central Virginian transitioned from compiling news to reporting it, with staff reporters conducting multi-source interviews, writing stories, and supplying bylines; and
WHEREAS, The Central Virginian began covering stories in the Counties of Culpeper, Fluvanna, Goochland, and Orange; occasionally, the newspaper also covered stories in the Cities of Richmond and Charlottesville; and
WHEREAS, from the 1970s onward, The Central Virginian reorganized its layout, reserving the front page for top stories, breaking the rest of the newspaper up into sections, and adding color to the front and back pages; and
WHEREAS, in 2006, The Central Virginian began to phase out coverage of surrounding regions to focus on serving Louisa County; today, the newspaper remains a respected and valued asset to the Louisa community; and
WHEREAS, once publishing only a weekly edition, The Central Virginian now offers a website and makes use of social media, allowing the newspaper to continuously provide up-to-date information to the community; and
WHEREAS, today, The Central Virginian is a premier, full-coverage newspaper, offering a mix of stories and sections on several full-color pages; and
WHEREAS, the past and present owners, publishers, writers, and contributors of The Central Virginian have worked tirelessly to ensure that the people of Louisa County receive accurate and timely news; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend The Central Virginian on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to The Central Virginian as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the newspaper’s century of loyal service to the people of Louisa County and Central Virginia.
