Celebrating the life of Thomas D. Daley.

WHEREAS, Thomas D. Daley, a highly respected public servant and a devoted husband, father, and brother, died on June 4, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Daley served the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (Council) with dedication and distinction, most recently as Deputy Director from 2005 until 2012, including service as Acting Agency Head in 2010; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Daley served the Commonwealth, and Virginia public higher education specifically, for over half of his life in positions at SCHEV, the College of William and Mary, the University of Virginia, and the Virginia Community College System; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Daley brought unparalleled excellence and integrity to his work on behalf of the Council, particularly in his analysis of capital-outlay needs and his legendary ability to analyze state and national higher education databases, as well as in his management of the agency’s administrative and budgetary functions; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Daley set exacting standards for his analyses, writings, and presentations, thereby raising the bar for his colleagues and leaving an indelible legacy on the agency and on Virginia higher education; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Daley realized that higher education offers the promise of both “bread and roses” and, as such, never stopped learning; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Daley valued and lived the lessons learned at his alma mater, the University of Virginia; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Thomas D. Daley; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas D. Daley as an expression of the General Assembly’s great respect for his memory and outstanding contributions to the people of Virginia.
