SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 374
Celebrating the life of Wallace Clay Nunley, Sr., M.D.

WHEREAS, Wallace Clay Nunley, Sr., M.D., a dedicated physician and an active member of the Town of Clifton Forge, died on January 16, 2013; and

WHEREAS, born in 1921 in Smoot, West Virginia, Wallace Nunley had dreamed of becoming a physician since he was in third grade; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Rainelle High School, Wallace Nunley worked for three years to earn enough money to attend Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville and graduated with honors in 1944; and

WHEREAS, Wallace Nunley earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1948 and completed his residency at the school in 1950; and

WHEREAS, after working as a physician in West Virginia for nearly a decade, Dr. Nunley moved his practice to Clifton Forge in 1959; and

WHEREAS, over the next 31 years, Dr. Nunley touched countless lives in Clifton Forge, treating thousands of patients, delivering over 6,000 babies, and answering many house calls; and

WHEREAS, serving the wider Alleghany County area at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Dr. Nunley was a member of the board, a chair of several committees, and a former president of medical staff; and

WHEREAS, a respected authority in the medical profession, Dr. Nunley was a member of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Alleghany County-Bath Medical Society, the Medical Society of Virginia, the Alleghany Foundation, and the American Medical Association; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunley served as a member of the board at Mountain National Bank in Clifton Forge and Colonial-American Bankshares Corporation, where he also served as vice chair of the board and chair of the executive committee and the long range planning committee; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunley was active in a variety of service organizations, including the Rotary Club, the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Kazim Shrine Temple, the South Atlantic Shrine Association, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and

WHEREAS, a proud alumnus of the University of Virginia, Dr. Nunley supported the school’s athletic program and served on the Student Aid Foundation board from 1981 to 1989; and

WHEREAS, enjoying faith and fellowship with the community, Dr. Nunley was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Clifton Forge; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunley’s legacy of heartfelt compassion and tireless service lives on in the countless people he cared for, helped, and inspired throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nunley is survived and dearly remembered by his wife, Marguerite; children Dr. Wallace, Jr., and Carolyn, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a devoted physician and a respected member of the Clifton Forge community, Wallace Clay Nunley, Sr., M.D.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Wallace Clay Nunley, Sr., M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
