2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, Kathleen Hwang, a dedicated educator and beloved principal of Sanders Corner Elementary School in Ashburn, died on November 21, 2012; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong educator, Kathleen Hwang dedicated her professional career to helping children learn and grow; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen Hwang spent 24 years in the Virginia Beach area as a teacher, organizational development specialist, assistant principal, and principal prior to joining Sanders Corner Elementary School in Ashburn as principal in 2005; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen Hwang brought a wealth of experience to Sanders Corner Elementary School and worked with parents, teachers, and staff to foster a nurturing environment where all students could excel; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen Hwang began each school day by welcoming students as they entered the school and gave morning and afternoon announcements; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen Hwang introduced the popular “I Read to the Principal Program,” in which students came to her office, picked a book off the shelf, and read it to her; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen Hwang also spearheaded the Watchdog Dads program, which encouraged fathers to volunteer at the school; and
WHEREAS, respected by her colleagues, Kathleen Hwang coauthored the recently released book, Collaborative School Leadership: Practical Strategies for Principals, to share her insights and experience with other educational leaders; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen Hwang was a resourceful and brilliant administrator who served as a source of comfort and inspiration to countless children with her grandmotherly presence and commitment to creating an educational community dedicated to advancing children’s learning and growth; and
WHEREAS, an intelligent, gracious, and kind woman, Kathleen Hwang will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her loving family, many friends, and students, parents, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired educator, Kathleen Hwang; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Kathleen Hwang as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
