2013 SESSION
13103649DWHEREAS, the sobriquet Virginian bespeaks everywhere on God’s green earth an individual who embodies the singularly ancient and revered traditions of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, each of our communities is characterized by men and women who are embodiments of the devotion to duty, to neighborliness, to civic engagement, and, more often than not, to religious faith that account for the imperishable richness of the Virginian way of life; and
WHEREAS, the people of Powhatan have been bereft of the life and labors of one of the community’s most distinctive and also distinguished citizens and public servants with the passing of Roscoe Lee Timberlake (1917–2012); and
WHEREAS, Roscoe Lee Timberlake was, in keeping with the honorable lineage of his fathers, a man of the earth, who earned his daily bread by tilling the land, harvesting crops—baling hay into his 86th year—and tending to animals, including a large herd of dairy cattle; and
WHEREAS, inspired simultaneously by the implications of his devout Christian faith and also devotion to his community, Roscoe Lee Timberlake ran for election to the Powhatan Board of Supervisors to ensure the well-being of the county’s public schools, believing, as a kinsman well remembers, that “fairness and equality” should be the hallmarks of our public institutions; and
WHEREAS, Roscoe Lee Timberlake went on to serve on the Board of Supervisors for 29 years—the second longest tenure of such service in the annals of Powhatan history; and
WHEREAS, as a fellow Supervisor has remembered, the public service as well as the private way of life of Roscoe Lee Timberlake were marked by “the classic values of honesty and integrity”; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Roscoe Lee Timberlake, who is remembered for his notable life and civic legacy; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Roscoe Lee Timberlake, a Christian gentleman and community servant.
