Celebrating the life of Robert Thomas Slusser, Sr.

WHEREAS, Robert Thomas Slusser, Sr., a decorated World War II veteran and respected businessman and community supporter of Clifton Forge, died on November 4, 2012; and

WHEREAS, born and raised in Fincastle, Robert “Bob” Slusser enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with the permission of his parents at the young age of 17 as the United States entered World War II; and

WHEREAS, Bob Slusser proudly served his country in the Pacific Theatre as a member of the 6th Marine Division, 22nd Regiment, C Company, receiving two Purple Hearts for wounds received at Guam and Okinawa; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Bob Slusser settled in Clifton Forge, working as the parts manager for Wood Chevrolet before graduating from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and joining his father-in-law as co-owner and co-manager of Nicely Funeral Home, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, a respected businessman, Bob Slusser provided professional, compassionate care to the families of Clifton Forge for more than six decades, while taking an active role in community affairs; and

WHEREAS, Bob Slusser was a member of Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge #166 A.F. & A.M., Alleghany Royal Arch Chapter #24 of Knights Templar, Alleghany Commandery #23, Kazim Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S., Roanoke Court #59 of the Royal Order of Jesters, Clifton Forge Shrine Club, and the former Hot Springs Shrine Club; and

WHEREAS, Bob Slusser also generously gave of his time and talents to help those in need in the community as a life member of Clifton Forge B.P.O.E. #1065 and the Burnside-Carpenter Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4299; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife, Nancy, Bob Slusser will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his son, Robert, and his family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of Clifton Forge, Robert Thomas Slusser, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Thomas Slusser, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
