Commending Deputy Joseph Jones.

WHEREAS, Deputy Joseph Jones is commended for his brave actions to prevent a possible tragedy at the Amelia County Courthouse; and

WHEREAS, on July 5, 2012, Deputy Jones, the bailiff at Amelia County Courthouse, went to a holding cell to recuff an inmate awaiting trial who had returned from the restroom; and

WHEREAS, the inmate, who had managed to remove his leg irons, began to strike Deputy Jones on the head with them; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Jones received numerous blows to the head, falling out of the holding cell into the hallway; and

WHEREAS, despite receiving multiple lacerations to the back of his head, Deputy Jones relied upon his training and instincts and realized the potential for a more dangerous situation to himself and innocent bystanders and managed to remain in possession of his weapon at all times; and

WHEREAS, the inmate was overpowered by two bystanders and Deputy Jones was treated at a local hospital for his injuries and released; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Jones’s determination to not lose possession of his weapon while being brutally assaulted prevented a possible tragedy at the courthouse; and

WHEREAS, the courage displayed by Deputy Jones is a reminder of the perils faced daily by those who serve in law enforcement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Deputy Joseph Jones for his heroic actions to prevent a possible tragedy at the Amelia County Courthouse; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Deputy Joseph Jones as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his faithful public service and courage and presence of mind in the face of danger.
