Celebrating the life of Roger Powers.

WHEREAS, Roger Powers, a successful businessman and former mayor of the Town of Grundy, died on December 19, 2012; and

WHEREAS, after moving to Grundy in 1944, Roger Powers attended Grundy High School; he was inducted into the school’s hall of fame for basketball in 1984; and

WHEREAS, Roger Powers attended the University of Richmond and served in the United States Army before returning to Grundy to begin a lifetime of exceptional public service; and

WHEREAS, Roger Powers guided the community as a member of the Grundy Town Council from 1994 - 2005 and as mayor from 2005 - 2011; he had also been the town manager since 2011; and

WHEREAS, working hard to ensure a strong future for Grundy, Roger Powers was a member of the Grundy Industrial Development Authority, the John Flannagan Water Authority, the Breaks Regional Airport Authority, and the Breaks Interstate Park Commission; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his considerable public service, Roger Powers was also a well-known businessman, owning several stores and an oil corporation; in 2010, the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce named him as the Man of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the area; and

WHEREAS, Roger Powers also served as the finance committee chair and former chair of the board at Appalachian School of Law, the secretary and treasurer on the board at Appalachian College of Pharmacy, and a member of the Appalachian School of Law Investment in Tomorrow Board; and

WHEREAS, loyally involved in fraternal and service organizations, Roger Powers was a 32nd degree Mason at Sandy Valley Lodge No. 17, a 50-year member of the Kazim Shrine Temple, and a charter member of the Willowbrook Country Club; he also held several positions in the Grundy Lions Club, where he had 46 years of perfect attendance; and

WHEREAS, a leader in the Grundy United Methodist Church, Roger Powers was a Sunday school teacher and sat on the administrative council and the board of trustees; and

WHEREAS, Roger Powers is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sheilah; his daughters Renee and Shonna, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Roger Powers, a respected businessman and community leader from Grundy; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Roger Powers as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
