WHEREAS, Francena McCorory, a 2010 alumna of Hampton University, triumphed at the Games of the XXX Olympiad held in London in 2012 by capturing a gold medal in the 1,600-meter relay team event; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Bethel High School, Francena McCorory graduated from Hampton University, where she won the 2009 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships and placed third in the outdoor championship; and

WHEREAS, in 2010, Francena McCorory not only defended her championship, but set a NCAA record and beat the previously held record that had stood for 19 years with a time of 50.54 seconds; she also won first place in the outdoor championship later that year; and

WHEREAS, Francena McCorory was a member of the 1,600-meter relay team that earned gold at the World Outdoor Games in 2011; and

WHEREAS, Francena McCorory placed third at the Olympic Trials to earn a trip to London as part of the United States 1,600-meter relay team, alongside teammates Allyson Felix, Sanya Richards-Ross, and DeeDee Trotter; and

WHEREAS, at the 2012 London Olympics, Francena McCorory ran alongside the fastest women in the world during the third leg of the 4 x 400 meter relay and expanded Team USA’s lead by .49 seconds, giving anchor Sanya Richards-Ross an easy sprint to the finish line and gold; and

WHEREAS, the team finished in 3 minutes, 16.87 seconds, defeating rival team Russia by 3.36 seconds, the largest margin in the final of the 4 x 400 meter relay at the Olympics since 1976; and

WHEREAS, Francena McCorory became the third person from a historically black college and university and the second Hamptonian at the 2012 London Olympics to capture Olympic gold; and

WHEREAS, an extraordinarily talented athlete, Francena McCorory has brought great honor to Hampton University, the Commonwealth, and nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Francena McCorory on winning a gold medal in the 1,600-meter relay team event at the Games of the XXX Olympiad held in London in 2012; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Francena McCorory as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for her triumphant performance.
