2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, James E. Astin, Jr., faithfully served the West Piedmont Planning District Board of Commissioners and the Pittsylvania County community for 31 years; and
WHEREAS, the West Piedmont Planning District Commission facilitates governmental cooperation and encourages planning and development in the Town of Rocky Mount; the Cities of Danville and Martinsville; and the Counties of Franklin, Henry, Patrick, and Pittsylvania; and
WHEREAS, James Astin held many positions on the commission, including treasurer from 1986 to 2012, a member of the Executive Committee, and the chair of the Technical Advisory Committee; and
WHEREAS, after joining in 1981, James Astin became an esteemed member of the commission and was looked to as a sage leader and a trusted friend; and
WHEREAS, James Astin also served as a member of the Pittsylvania County Planning Commission and as the Pittsylvania County planner; and
WHEREAS, James Astin was a key member of the farming community in Pittsylvania County, working for an agrichemical business and managing his family farm properties; and
WHEREAS, concerned with the well-being of his friends and neighbors, James Astin is active in his church and many other community programs, including the Mount Cross Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, an accomplished dancer, James Astin and his wife, Ann, have performed a variety of dances, including the tango, rumba, fox trot, and salsa, at events in countries around the world; and
WHEREAS, over the course of his career, James Astin displayed exceptional leadership and helped to encourage physical, economic, and social development both in Pittsylvania County and in the region; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend James E. Astin, Jr., for 31 years of service with the West Piedmont Planning District Board of Commissioners; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to James E. Astin, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his decades of loyal public service and best wishes for the future.
